The Bear River Cabin is a spectacular log cabin located on 57
dramatic, wooded acres on scenic Route 26 in the Western Maine
town of Newry, a three hour ride from Boston. It is approximately
5 minutes from the Androscoggin River, 5 minutes from Grafton
Notch State Park, 10 minutes from both the Sunday River Ski Area
and the scenic town of Bethel and has direct access to the Maine
Snowmobile system (ITS 84), the 42 mile Grafton Loop Trail and the
Appalachian Trail. It is the perfect four season location for
downhill and cross country skiing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, ice
skating, hiking, fishing, boating, sightseeing and just plain old
relaxing.
The Bear River, the primary drainage system for Mahoosuc Mountain
Range, flows for almost 2,000 feet through the property providing
unparalleled water views as well as fishing (rainbow and brook
trout) and swimming opportunities. A large, natural pool in the
river, located only steps from the Cabin was once the town’s
unofficial swimming hole. The pool is over 40 feet wide and 60
feet long and up to 12 feet deep with a smooth granite bottom and
is perfect for a hot afternoon dip. Just up from the river is an
area that fills with water in the winter and turns into a large
skating pond when frozen.
The Cabin is sited on slopping terrain, is reached by a new bridge
constructed over the river, and has views of both the river and
3,300 foot Puzzle Mountain. It is presently under construction
and scheduled for occupancy by Thanksgiving. It has over 5,000
square feet of livable space, including three very large bedrooms
(two with vaulted ceilings); four and one-half baths (the master
with Jacuzzi tub); a spectacular vaulted ceiling Great Room with
adjoining large kitchen and large dining room; a loft overlooking
the Great room; 5 sliding doors leading to a 1000 square foot deck
with hot tub; and a two car heated garage.
Built of Douglas fir logs, from 13 to 17 inches in diameter that
were imported from British Colombia, it was designed and finished
with over 8,000 square feet of pine ceilings and a dramatic
pitched roof that includes four large gables and four dormers. A
computerized radiant heating system installed beneath the floors
throughout the Cabin (including the garage) insures that our
guests will always be comfortable and will be able to walk around
the Cabin in their bare feet, regardless of the outside
temperature. The Cabin is wired with CAT 5 for high speed
telecommunications, as well as with Direct TV and an $10,000
entertainment system featuring 37 strategically located Bose
speakers. In short, The Bear River Cabin sets a new standard for
luxurious, year-round, country vacationing in Western Maine.
